Chakalaka prego steak sarmie
The great thing about a sarmie is that it’s easy to make. Add some lekker local chakalaka goodness, mouthwatering steak, and savoury sauces, and you have yourself a loaded sarmie, the perfect Mzansi festival meal.
What you’ll need
6 tablespoons olive oil
4 tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 chilli, chopped
4 garlic cloves, crushed
1 teaspoon sugar
Half of a 410g can of chakalaka
400g rump steak
1 tablespoon butter
1 baguette, halved lengthways
Rocket for serving
How to make it
Heat 5 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat, add tomatoes and chilli and cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
Add the garlic, sugar, and chakalaka, and cook for 10 minutes.
In a separate pan, melt the butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium to high heat and cook the steak to your liking.
Allow the meat to rest for 5 minutes, then slice. Spread the sauce on the baguette, top with the meat, rocket, and more sauce and enjoy.
Rooibos tea punch
Nothing screams proudly Mzansi like Rooibos tea. This punch is refreshing and the perfect drink for a warm summer day. Sweet, tasty and easy to make.
What you’ll need
15 Rooibos tea bags
1 litre of cold water
250ml sugar
2 litre pineapple juice
1 litre apricot juice
250ml lemon juice
1 lemon (optional)
Bitters to taste
How to make it
Add 15 tea bags to make a pot of Rooibos tea.
Add 205ml sugar to the hot tea and let it cool.
Add cold water, pineapple, and apricot juice, as well as the lemon juice and bitters to taste.
Cut the lemon into thick slices and add it in.
Add some ice and enjoy chilled!
Caramel syrup popcorn
This is an easy-to-make snack and the ultimate crowd-pleaser – just the right mix of sweet and salty. You can make it for your loved ones this summer and they will want more.
What you’ll need
Quarter cup of popcorn
Half a cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of caramel-flavoured syrup
How to make it
Pop your quarter cup popcorn the way you prefer making it.
In a separate pot, slowly melt the sugar with the butter and syrup over low heat until the sugar has dissolved and formed a thick caramel.
Then pour the caramel over the popcorn and toss until well coated.
Serve and enjoy!
