October 2026
Warmer days are here, gardens are bursting into bloom, and there’s a buzz calling us outdoors! The best part? You don’t need a big budget to make the most of the season.
From relaxed weekend picnics to scenic hikes and leisurely walks, there are plenty of affordable ways to enjoy the fresh air, soak up the sunshine and discover a different side of the city.
So, pack a picnic, lace up your walking shoes and go with the flow – your next adventure could be closer (and cheaper) than you think!
Take a nature walk
If you’re in Johannesburg, head to Delta Park in Victory Park for walking trails, three tree-lined dams, bird hides and peaceful picnic areas. And you can visit the Sacramento Trail if you’re in Gqeberha.
Pack a picnic
Bring snacks from home and spread out at Shamwari Private Game Reserve in Gqeberha or visit the Botanical Garden and Emmarentia Dam, a spacious free-entry favourite with lawns, themed gardens and walking paths in Johannesburg.
Move outdoors
Swap one indoor workout for stretching, yoga or a brisk walk in a nearby park. James and Ethel Gray Park in Melrose offers open lawns, walking paths and skyline views, while Pitch n Padel located in Mill Park offers scenic, is a relaxing setting where you can enjoy a match with your friends and family.
House rules
Before heading out, check current opening hours, entrance fees and event information. Pack water, sunscreen, a hat and a light layer for changing weather. Visit parks and hiking trails during daylight, stay on marked routes and, where possible, go with a friend or group. Please leave flowers and indigenous plants where they grow, take your litter home and respect each venue’s rules.
